Theme Words: A Simpler Approach To What You Want In The New Year

January is always a great time to reflect on the year past and envision possibilities for the year ahead. As you do, you may come to some concrete conclusions on what to continue as is, experience more of, or leave totally by the wayside. What are those things for you? If you haven’t already done so, try finding some time to give this some consideration before the new year gets in full swing.

Using a list of life areas can be helpful. Here are a few of the big ones to consider: Health, Career, Finances, Family, Home, Fun and Adventure, Relationships, Friends. What else can you think of? The list may differ from one to the other.

As you reflect on the list, think about what you want to experience differently and, even more important, who you want to BE. You could use the classic SWOT approach to help you create the actions and goals to get you there. SWOT stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. How does playing to your strengths give you an advantage? What weaknesses and challenges need to be addressed? What opportunities can you engage in to help? Are there potential threats to watch for and keep out of the way? Using SWOT may be a great approach to figuring out your big goals for the year. You are likely to come up with several different goals or resolutions for your year.

Maybe you have heard the stats that speak to how tough it can be to keep new year goals and resolutions alive. Trying to remember and take action on all of them at once is not only overwhelming but also increases the risk of falling short. Instead, try picking one goal to begin with and tackle it as a sprint of massive action until it's done. Then, move on to the next one. You will likely get a lot further, and faster, when you do so.

Next, see if you can connect the dots and come up with a word or two to describe who you are BEING when you have accomplished those goals or resolutions. Your two words simplify and serve as a consistent guide as you apply them to your intentions and the many facets of your day. For example, this year, I chose the words Healthy and Happy. Healthy and happy are words that could apply to any life area, any goal or situation, and my day-to-day decision-making. The key is keeping the word(s) front of mind. Instead of trying to speed through your day, take the opportunity to pause or slow down, and evaluate what you are saying yes to from the perspective of your word(s). Your words become the inner guide and compass to keep you on track with your big goals and resolutions.

Now it’s your turn. What are the big goals/resolutions on your mind for 2022? What are the common denominator words that describe who you are BEING as you go about accomplishing them? How will you adopt a habit of integrating these words into your day-to-day decisions and actions?

All the best in the new year!

Achieving goals and resolutions has a lot to do with how you spend your time and what you choose to focus on.  Each of us has a schedule. For some, this schedule is detailed and down to the minute. For others, the schedule is more haphazard with a few concrete plans surrounded by more indefinite periods of time. Nevertheless, we all have an idea of what we want to get done today, what we want to get done this week, and what we want to get done in a month, a year or during the course of our lives.

Getting to your goals is a journey and that journey requires that you keep moving. Behavior-based goals allow you to develop the habits that keep you moving in the right direction so that accomplishing what you want to accomplish becomes second nature. They say that a journey begins with a single step. One of the first steps you can take to a more productive future lies in the pages of this FREE ebook. It’s time to take that step. So, let’s go!
