HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Greetings and my best wishes to you and your loved ones in the new year.  With the new year it is quite tempting to think about how the past year went and what we would like to experience differently.  Some believe in making new years resolutions, while others avoid them altogether.

This is one of my favorite strategies for changing the way others live with their ADHD. When you have ADHD, it is easy to get caught up in the trap of always noticing what is wrong. Wouldn't you agree?  In some cases, being aware of what's wrong can be very valuable. But what if that kind of thinking is the majority of the time and keeps you or another stuck?  It can't be so valuable then.  If you are looking to make some changes in the new year, I encourage you to start with this. Notice over the course of a few days what you are thinking or saying to yourself? Or, what are you saying to others?  What are you hearing?  Is there a healthy balance in positive and negative feedback or self-talk? If not, this is one way to begin turning things around to experience better days in 2016.

What does anyone gain if the focus is always on what is wrong, their latest mistake, or what they can't do, Surely self-awareness is important when it comes to self-regulation. But an overdose of that kind of awareness does not leave much room for personal development and growth.

With ADHD, we are more prone to negative feedback and frequently dwelling on what is wrong. Too much of that over time, and our mindset and motivation wanes to a point where we struggle to keep trying and moving forward on our goals for our lives.

For 2016, be willing to acknowledge what is wrong, but push yourself a little bit more to notice what is right. When you notice something right or something that worked out really well for you, think about why that is.  What is it that you did to get that result?  How can you apply that approach and those smarts to areas in your life that are more challenging? You may find developing more awareness around what is right will have the power to help you make the changes you desire in the year ahead.
