Parents, Fill *Your* Cup!

You, as a parent, have done so much to support your ADHD child. You’ve gotten them support from a therapist or coach, school and have set up creative routines and reminders at home to help them to live and learn easier. (You’re a great parent by the way).

And what about support for you?

Parenting an ADHD child is no easy task. Often parents can feel alone, frustrated or misunderstood when advice for neurotypical kids does not work for their child. Enter, COMMUNITY, a crucially important but often overlooked piece of the ADHD support pie. Talking to parents and others who *get* ADHD. People who won’t bat an eye when hearing about an ensuing meltdown when switching from video games to dinner. People who will nod and smile when hearing about the umpteenth time a middle school student forgot about schoolwork or an assignment.

Here are a few places to find community, support and sharing:

  1. Join a support group — Research online, national organizations like CHADD and ADDA have support groups online and locally
  2. Talk to your kid — Do they have friends or classmates with ADHD? Set up a parent coffee date!
  3. Seek professional help — A therapist or coach with knowledge of ADHD will be a resource for information and an empathetic listening ear.
  4. Check at school — Sometimes schools will have groups or networking events for parents of kids with learning differences
  5. Talk to your child’s therapist — They may run a group for ADHD parents

And as the saying goes, it’s hard to pour from an empty cup, so don’t hesitate to reach out for your own personal support while navigating the world of ADHD parenting. There’s a whole world of community, resources, and knowing laughter just waiting for you. Feel free to reach out to any of our coaches at the Center if you’d like more support in this area.
